After studying photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Peter Woelck worked as a professional photographer in the GDR for various companies and magazines. Moreover, he independently created a vast amount of artistic works, especially in the field of portrait and architectural photography. Photographs of the construction of the Berlin Television Tower, cityscapes of Leipzig, and intense portraits from the 60s through the 80s document how life used to be in a country that no longer exists.

One of Woelck’s more famous photographs shows the Fernsehturm (TVTower) at Alexanderplatz under construction in 1968. The sphere at its top has yet to receive all of its glass cladding. Inside will be a rotating restaurant and viewing areas. The tower’s antenna is still a nub.
Two streetlights in the foreground arch toward the tower in the center as if measuring its increasing height, like the marks on a wall as a child grows.
Woelck’s photograph shows futurity under construction, quite literally Berlin building a vision of itself.
