Menno Aden’s work comprises various photo series in which he analytically examines our built environment. They are often topographical in nature. They are about patterns and systems of order that permeate and structure our everyday life. The work "Untitled (Home-Guest)" shows typical gymnasiums that Aden photographs from different positions and then assembles digitally. Constructions that seem protective and at the same time threatening.
The gymnasium has become an ambivalent place due to its recent history as an emergency shelter for refugees. On one wall there is a board showing the score between "home" and "guest" - terms whose meanings are currently being renegotiated.
Menno Aden’s work has received several awards, such as the 2013 German Prize for Science Photography and the International Photography Awards (Architecture), Los Angeles. Solo exhibitions of his "Room Portraits" were recently shown at the Swiss Biennale dell immagine, exhibition venues Chiasso/Lugano, at the Museanum, Dresden, at Kunstraum Potsdam and at the Wandsworth Museum, London.
