The picture was taken in Buenos Aires in "my street". Only two blocks away from Casa de la Suiza, where I was allowed to live and work for six months as part of an artist residence. I surely walked past the car that had been in the same place for over 6 months a hundred times. Always visually overwhelmed – distracted by something. The street was alive day and night. Until my eye glued to that door on another sunny day. /
The camera, the pencil, collections of ephemera—no matter his tools, Markus Uhr’s artistic practice can always be read as a cartography of his daily life, with a focus on that which is discarded or disregarded. The results are intimate archives of images or collections of materials—quests to situate himself; simultaneously diary and self-portrait. Usually, their loosely-woven narratives find their final, indexical form in artist’s books. In Uhr’s work, appropriation goes hand-in-hand with, for objects, material transformation or, for magazine photographs or internet images, transformation through retouching or free form selection. Drawing on images with ink or ballpoint pen, Uhr leads our gaze to motifs that have iconographic importance in his personal atlas of images, creating new frames of reference. And all of this is subject to a principle of arrangement that is both intuitive and conceptual, and finds its poetic expression above all in lacunae and in imperfections.
