Once around the world in 150 days: a journey that sounds as romantic and luxurious as our idea of a tropical island. The photo series titled after this idea that Lisa Drost and Lisa Peters created during their Weltreise captures the familiar tension between the notion of the ideal vacation and its reality, often more stressful, boring, or simply unspectacular than we envision. In each place Drost & Peters visited, they donned pendant shirts, one with Tropical and the other with Island flock-printed across the shoulder, and asked someone they met in that place tophotograph them.

Drost & Peters employ both these instruments of tourism, photography and T-shirts, to narrate Tropical Island. Their T-shirts, made-to order before embarking on their trip, avoid participation in consumer tourism and, in their appropriation of the vacation cliché, remove any tie to specific location, generalizing the sentiment. In doing so, the series mimics their boastful function while simultaneously subverting tourist endeavors, presenting a critique of our globetrotting aspirations, albeit, in Drost & Peters’ willing and enthusiastic participation, a complicated one.

In collaboration with Lisa Drost
