What seems to be a digital collage is a photograph of a physical still life, staged by placing a TV screen underneath an aquarium. The photographs stem from King’s "a_rose_is_a_rose", a series of photographs exploring digital dark romance: leaked celebrity nudes, body-deforming hentai and sexualised Disney characters are suspended in water together with roses and digital debris.
Andy King (*1988, Moscow) is a digital media artist and researcher based in Berlin. She has a background in psychology and studied new media at UDK Berlin. Her satirical and political works focus on internet subcultures and themes of loneliness and human relationships in a digital age. As part of the first generation which experienced popular culture through the internet, she is interested in the blurring of differences between truth and fiction, copy and original, private and public spaces. Her process is based on the repetition of finding, copying, printing, manipulating, photographing – mimicking the way information is mass-produced and distorted.
