“All The Stuff Going On Here” is from Stein’s series referencing TV monsters, often from Japan. A Sasquatch-like monster, with an otherworldly face, framed with a cascade of soft light lilac fur, seems to reconcile opposing concepts. Depicted in a purple monochrome, other antagonistic forces are suggested: the strength-displaying imagery of a long-teethed monster opposed by the traditional feminine palette. The tension between aggression and softness, and masculine and feminine, invites us to resolve the image one way or the other – or else to allow it to remain in an in-between state.
