112 × 62 cm
Video sculpture, 4K, loop, 40 min, color, sound, life-size on a 50-inch monitor standing verti-cally on the ground, metal rectangle, 112 × 62 cm, 2020
In THE APPROPRIATE BODY beholders encounter the performer Sunayana Shetty life-size on a 50-inch upright monitor as she assumes yoga poses within the demarcated space. Breathing calmly and deeply, Shetty re-enacts movements of the traditional discipline developed on the Indian subcontinent that found its way to the West via colonialism and has been practiced here since the early 20th century as a means of physical and mental self-enhancement.
The Indian performer counters cultural assumptions directed at her body by enacting the exer-cises in the slow and concentrated mode of a learner. She gazes directly at us. Moments of tension alternate with those of relaxed concentration. She probes the edges of the screen, explores and perceives the space in which she moves along with the associated dimensions and colonial pattern of images, extending her body within it. She thus defines her body for herself, just as her movement does the same for the imaginary space of the media.
In her video sculptures, she negotiates media image formulas that she removes from their context. Using performative strategies, she researches the independent life of images as well as the relationship of the body to circulating media images. With her video sculptures, Yvon Chabrowski creates a tangible thinking space that allows different perspectives and narratives.
