At the heart of Meschtschanow’s oeuvre is a critical engagement with modernist design, particularly with the relationship between form and function, support and sculpture. Among his best-known works are a series of chairs from Biedermeier to Bauhaus - or rather replicas of the classics - that the artist collects and subjects to "repair" by screwing them through a metal frame as if in a corset.
The Neon series is to be understood as a kind of educated bourgeois color theory game. The title of the particular color in which the lamp glows, in this case "Miss Lonelyhearts" after Nathanael West, is stamped into the nameplate.
