In her work, which encompasses performance, painting, photography and film, Sophia Süßmilch opens up her own cosmos in which she negotiates her own self-image in relation to social coordinates in an unmistakably characteristic visual language. In the process, she makes various cultural-historical references and, seemingly incidentally, exposes internalised patriarchal thought structures as ridiculous and deeply cynical. While her photographs and performances testify to relentless immediacy, her paintings, which confront bizarre creatures, appear enigmatic and symbolic.
Sophia Süßmilch, born in Dachau in 1983, lives and works in Munich and Vienna. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and has exhibited at the Ludwig Forum Aachen and Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, among others.
