Chris Drange’s hyperrealistic and over-live-sized works depict photos of influencers with a big following on social media. The oil paintings are planned and conceptualised (with emojis) by the artist and sent to be painted in China.

Besides the attention that a selfie draws to itself when presented in terms of oil on canvas – rather than the usual screen-sized Image – Drange’s works can be discussed from various interesting perspectives. One could view his work in an art historical context, where classical portrait paintings from the 15th century are translated into a post-digital era where Pop Art and readymades are ubiquitous. One could also view his work in regards to contemporary culture, reflecting on the power of popular idols and Westernized beauty standards, the longing for approval and the promise of an everlasting youth.
With all these, along with the artists’ choice of production process, questions of authorship and originality, as well as the validity of a global value chain, are addressed in parodic ways that underscore an ineluctable transience.

Drange (*1983 in Köthen, Germany) lives and works in Hamburg and Berlin. He obtained a MFA from the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg in 2019. Prior to this, he studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, the Art Students League of New York, the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
