Johannes Bendzulla aims to endow digital images with a “body”, a physical presence of sorts, and give them a home in material space. Printed on heavy, visibly structured paper, they gain an organic appearance supporting this aim. The digital and the analogue meet, not just in the choice of material subject matter presented in overly polished yet pixelated surfaces, but also with regard to references made to painting as traditionally analogue medium in art. Take the work presented here: the motif seems to sit on a canvas, but a closer look reveals a meticulous copy of canvas structure, and the fact that the motif covers the edges of the canvas is another nod to classic oil painting. While Bendzulla works in series and with serialized image making, each work from a series is unique by getting different details added to the edges of the frame. This also makes the work bigger in a way and adds a sculptural element – if you want to view it properly, you will have to move around it and view it from all sides.
